Scafell Pike: Everything You Need to Know Before You Climb

Scafell Pike: Everything You Need to Know Before You Climb

About Scafell Pike

Standing at 978 metres, Scafell Pike is England’s tallest mountain and a classic challenge for hikers and adventure enthusiasts.

Popular Routes

Most people hike from Wasdale Head, taking the shortest and most direct route (about 10km round trip with 900m ascent).
Other options include routes from Seathwaite or Langdale, which are longer but often quieter.

Best Time to Climb

Late spring to early autumn (May–September) offers the best conditions, but be prepared for changeable weather even in summer.

What to Bring

  • Waterproofs and layers
  • Hat and gloves (even in summer)
  • Hiking boots
  • Plenty of water
  • Snacks and a head torch
  • Paper map and compass

Respect the Mountain

Scafell Pike is a rugged environment, with rocky paths that can become slippery. Stick to marked routes and leave no trace to help protect the area.
