Your Guide to Climbing Snowdon: Wales’ Highest Peak

Your Guide to Climbing Snowdon: Wales’ Highest Peak

Why Snowdon?

Snowdon, or Yr Wyddfa, stands 1,085 metres tall and is the highest mountain in Wales. Its stunning views and well-maintained paths make it one of the UK’s most popular peaks.

Best Routes to the Top

There are six main walking routes:

  • Llanberis Path (most popular and gradual)
  • Pyg Track (shorter, steeper, scenic)
  • Miners’ Track (historic route, joins Pyg near summit)
  • Watkin Path (challenging and less crowded)
  • Snowdon Ranger (steady climb, great views)
  • Rhyd Ddu Path (quieter and scenic)

Best Time of Year to Climb

Between May and October, with longer daylight and milder weather. Winter ascents need specialist skills and equipment.

Essential Gear

  • Weatherproof jacket
  • Base layers
  • Hat and gloves
  • Walking boots
  • Map/compass
  • Snacks and water
  • Emergency whistle

Staying Safe

Snowdon can be busy, so start early and be aware of weather changes. The summit café is only open seasonally, so don’t rely on it for shelter.

Supported Challenges

If you’re tackling Snowdon as part of the National 3 Peaks, Summit Club can manage your timings, transport, and group support. Book your Snowdon challenge and take the next step towards the summit.
